The Castell Coch Walk and Guided Tour
Castell CochA magnificent magical sight! The fairytale towers reach out of the forest trees on the craggy hillside north of the city.

Many people dismiss Castell Coch as a pure invention of Victorian fantasy.

How wrong they are!

On this walk around the outside of the castle you will learn how this tiny fortress, the “Red Castle”, actually dates back almost 900 years. Detective work by historians and archaeologists has shed light on its colourful and dramatic early days as a fortress:

how its dominant position was irresistible to those seeking to control the Taff Gorge;

Castell Cochhow it was reputedly the scene of a dramatic kidnapping of a Norman Lord by a rebellious Welsh Prince; and…

…yes, it has its share of legends of hidden treasure, hidden tunnels, and ghostly visitations!

And that is before we go inside! On the second half of our visit we enter and discover its stunning transformation into a medieval fantasy summer house by the richest man in Britain in the 19th century. You will have to pinch yourself to remind yourself you are in Cardiff and not the Rhine Valley!

You will see the genius of the extraordinary art architect William Burges. You will learn all about the inspirational relationship he had with his patron, the Marquess of Bute, and how it resulted in this make-believe medieval house – much admired but ultimately seldom used!
