A magnificent magical sight! The fairytale towers reach out of the forest trees on the craggy hillside north of the city.
Many people dismiss Castell Coch as a pure invention of Victorian fantasy.
How wrong they are!
In this 100 minute tour, as well as being guided through its magical interiors, you will discover secrets about this castle and those who owned it, which cannot be found in print: an intriguing, historic, magical and tragically ironic symbol of an age.
The tour begins with a walk around the outside of the castle, and as we spot its remaining and unusual medieval remains, enjoy stories and legends of its early life as a medieval mountainside fortress:
- a base for the Welsh Princes and their Norman conquerors
- banquets, kidnappings, ransoms, legends of buried treasure (and the odd ghost!)
- its sudden decline and ruin in the 14th century.
Then we step inside for the main part of the tour - a magical journey through a medieval fantasy castle restored as a summer house for the richest man in Britain in the 19th century. You will have to pinch yourself to remind yourself you are in Cardiff and not high in the misty mountains of central Europe!
You will see the genius of the extraordinary art architect William Burges; witness the breathtaking images and colours in the rooms, and discover how the décor of each richly decorated room has a story to tell. Hear also about life as a member of Britain’s richest Victorian family - the Butes of Cardiff Castle - who were almost like Cardiff’s own Royal Family, and get the gossip on the antics of their Scottish and Welsh ancestors, whose portraits adorn the walls!Practicalities
